Salinas, and the nearby sierra to the northeast that extends all the way to Murcia, take their names from the salt lake upon whose banks the village once stood. In 1751 the level of the lake rose following torrential rains, flooding the village and killing most of its inhabitants. It was after this event that the location of the village was moved to its present position. Salinas is a small village whose main activities are manufacturing footwear and leather goods and the production of wine.
