The semiarid areas of the centre and south of the Costa Blanca are small deserts with their own particular climate conditions (scarce rainfall, harsh summer drought and more than 3,000 hours of sun a year), so plant and animal species living here have had to adapt to live in this extreme environment. This is one of the rare nesting spots for the trumpeter finch (Bucanethes githagineus) on the European continent, along with other species such as the austere black wheatear (Oenanthe leucura) and the red-necked nightjar (Caprimulgus ruficollis).
