Benifato is the smallest village - 140 inhabitants - in the Sierra Aitana. It is located at a height of 650 metres in one of the coldest parts of the Sierra and the harshness of its climate has meant that the village has been losing its inhabitants since the beginning of the century. Agriculture is the main economic activity - generally dry crops such as olives, almonds and medlar. The old centre is typically Islamic with curiously coloured fountains in small squares that are accessed via narrow sloping streets. This is an extremely peaceful village without a supermarket.
Gastronomy:
Paella, roast meats are typical dishes.
Monuments:
St Michael´s parish church.
Festivals and Events:
At the end of August, major celebrations are held in honour of St Michael with paella, floral offerings and open-air celebrations.
Situation:
On the road from Guadalest to Alcoy.
Tour of the town:
Its fresh water is greatly appreciated in the locality. The most famous spring in the Sierra Aitana forms part of the recreational area of the Font del Partegat - the spring is so cold that it is hard to keep your hand in the water for more than a minute. On the walk up to the spring, the water of the Font dels Xorrets gushes up from mossy rocks. From the Font Vella you can reach the ´nevero´ of the Clot dels Teixos and the summit of Aitana.
