All of the villages known as the Vall de Beneixama - Benejama, Campo de Mirra and Cañada - were historically part of the nearby town of Biar. Campo de Mirra is the smallest of the three and the last to obtain its independence (1843). The Civil Governor, the poet Ramón de Campoamor, gave the village, which had previously been known as ´El Campet´, a new name. In the nearby castle Jaime I of Aragon and Alfonso X of Castile signed the Treaty of Almizra on the 26th of March 1244, which determined the borders between the two kingdoms. A stone at the foot of the hill notes the place where the Castilian King spent the night.
