During the Middle Ages the Christian neighbourhood was at the top of Mola, whilst the Moors lived in the present-day location next to the Vinalopó River. With the expulsion of the Moors and the loss of the military functions of the fortress the Mola settlement was abandoned for the location of the present-day Novelda. Its geographical situation, in the centre of Vinalopó corridor, has facilitated its becoming an industrial and exporting city. The main economic activities are centred on the production of marble extracted from the regions many quarries, and saffron and dessert grapes, the production of which has required the Vinalopó to be channelled. A bagging technique to delay the harvest until winter was also invented.
