Though Petrer is located 4 km from Elda, industrial progress and demographic trends at the beginning of the twentieth century saw the two urban areas linked to form a conurbation called Elda-Petrer. In this area there is a street where the houses on one side belong to one Petrer whilst those on the other belong to Elda. The conurbation has 85,000 inhabitants and is the fifth largest city of the Valencia Region. Petrer´s origins are both Roman and Moorish and remains from both these cultures have been found in its castle. The castle has been rebuilt and is one of the most splendid of the entire province. The castle and the village were once a dependency of the Count of Cocentaina and were resettled by Valencian speaking inhabitants after the expulsion of the Moors in 1609. The town is entirely devoted to industrial activities and manufactures footwear and leather goods.
