The Marquis de la Romana, the former lord of the town, gave his name to this new town in the Middle Vinalopó Valley, which became an independent town in 1929. The town is located in the foothills of the Sierra del Reclot, the Sierra del Algayat and the Sierra de Pedrizas. Called the ´Village of pine trees, marble and good wine´ it is distinguished by its wide landscaped streets with two large pine trees called the ´Top Pine Tree´ and the ´Bottom Pine Tree´. In common with other villages in the region its main economic activities are the production of wine and the quarrying of marble in the Sierra del Reclot.
Gastronomy:
Gazpacho manchego (cold tomao soup), rice with rabbit and snails, sausages and homemade cakes are some of the local dishes.
Art:
Handmade lace and esparto.
Monuments:
Church dedicated to St Peter the Apostle and the ayuntamiento (town hall) are worthy of note.
Festivals and Events:
Moor´s and Pirate´s festivities are held from the 22-25 of August in honour of the Sacred Hearts.
Situation:
This locality is situated on the road from Novelda to Yecla via Pinoso and La Algueña. Located 40 km from Alicante.
Tour of the town:
Visits can be made to the three sierras in the Argayat area - the cueva negra, Peña and Mina - other summits are Puntales Gros and Cuartés where there is another cave. The Sierra del Reclot provides La Romana´s with its characteristic backdrop, and the locality´s typical red marble of the locality.
