Seven villages formed the Alcalá valley: Alcalá de la Jovada, Beniaia, Criola, Benialí, Benixarco, La Roca and La Adsubia. Of these seven villages, today only two still remain: Alcalá de la Jovada and Beniaia. The Alcalá valley held an important position as the capital the fiefdom of the Moorish leader Al-Azraq, the one with blue eyes, who fought against Jaime I of Aragon for years before being banished. The unequal fight was made possible by the inaccessibility of the terrain. These events are recalled in Alcalá de la Jovada in a fountain where the water spouts out of an effigy of the Moorish leader. This is a typical farming village whose main crops are cherries, which have been granted a ´Denominación de Origen´(guarantee of origin) label.

Blat Picat, Minxos (pizza-like base with fish and vegetables), L´Espencat, Arrós al Forn (baked rice).
Monuments:
In the village´s main square there is a fountain with a spout in the shape of the leader Al-Azraq.

Festivals and Events:
Moors and Christians pageants and a fancy-dress ball take place from the 28-30 of July. On the 17th of January, St Anthony del Porquet, ´ Plantá del Pi´, is celebrated.

This locality is reached on the road from Pego to Muro de Alcoy. Situated 80 km from Alicante.

Abandoned Moorish villages, snow wells in Dalt and Baix, caves in Beniaia, Racó de Condoig Paraje Natural (interesting landscape), Iberian remains in Xarpolar and Castell d´Alcalá and an abandoned village in L´Atzuvia.

You can play golf at Las Ramblas (96.532.20.11) and Villamartín (96.676.50.51). A range of activities is on offer in the marinas of the Royal Yacht Club (96.571.01.08) and at the International Marina (96.571.36.50). There are flying and horse riding clubs (96.670.62.41) and a sports stadium.
