Today's route starts in Dénia with the aim of reaching Xàbia. We could describe it as the stage of the caves since during our trip we can visit - depending on the state of the sea - a total of nine caves, with Tallada cave as the highlight.
We start our adventure just beyond the Marineta Cassiana, where the beach of Les Rotes begins. Today we will enjoy rocky and stony beaches and coves, huge cliffs and the Cap de Sant Antoni. It is important to remember that we are navigating the Marine Reserve of Cap de Sant Antoni so we must be awareof its restrictions.
La Punta del Sard y la Punta Negra will be our first point of call, as well as the impressive Montgó and its natural park. Some areas of submerged rocks will give a bit of rhythm to our paddle. After passing Les Arenetes beach, just below a restaurant, we enter the first cave of the day, a small, low roof, which is accompanied by a small pebble beach.
From this point, the majestic Cap de Sant Antoni will mark the route of the day.
This entire first part of the day makes for an interesting stopping point. If you wish to do some snorkeling, you can't miss the area of Les Arenetes, where the Les Rotes road ends, visible from the sea.
Passing this point will be visible the Torre del Gerro, one of the watchtowers of the area and part of the Castillos de la Frontera del Miedo on the Costa Blanca route of the 100 Castles. Just below the tower is the Cova del Aiguadolç, a cave where fresh water comes out of the earth. You cannot enter by kayak, but it is worth having a quick stop.
We continue paddling towwards cova Tallada, an old quarry and tuff stone extraction mine. It is important to take a light and to read the visiting regulations. It is a mandatory stop which is highly recommended.
Tallada cave regulations
If we continue with the route we must bear in mind that there are no possible escape routes until we pass the Cap de Sant Antoni and arrive in Xàbia.
After Tallada cove, the impressive walls of the cape and its caves await us: Cova Arrugada, where we can see speleological formations, stalactite columns and lava flows; the two parts of the cova Negra, one large and a second smaller and deeper which you can enter by swimming; the cova of Badall or Cova del Xiulador, narrow and long (you cannot turn the kayak inside); the Cova de l'Arc, with a natural stone arch at its entrance and turquoise waters (possible stop for disembarkation, on rocks); and cova Noray, which we can see at the entrance (rock shaped like a bollard - noray).
Heading for Xàbia, and almost at the headland, we find two large coves, in the first (Cala de Llevant), entering on the right, we find an area of protection from northerly winds and a large area of calm water. In the second, Cala Garbí, we must visit cova de la Cala. Above us is the Cap de Sant Antoni lighthouse.
We continue towards Xàbia, to go around the headland and meet the Escull (La Mona), a large rock which we pass keeping close to the cliff until we reach the small cove of Pope or Tangó, with the option of disembarking. At this point we must be very careful, since it is an area with the possibility of landslides.
In front of us is the port of Xàbia and next to it the beach of La Grava,, the end of our stage.
